Letter to a newly pregnant friend

Just a quick note as I've been thinking about you a lot. I am sooo happy for the both of you! How exciting! Like I said at dinner, my first pregnancy marked for me what would become the most gratifying, meaningful years of my life so far, and so of course I am thrilled to see you in that very same spot.

There is so much to tell you and so much to discuss but I will try not to overwhelm you with this first letter, but tell you to enjoy it, simply that. Even the aches and pains, because as much as motherhood is about snuggles and kisses and diapers, it is sacrifice and hardships too, at times, and most definitely frustration - I'm not going to lie! - but it is all worth it. Notice I don't say it is all worth it "in the end" - it can't be worth it by the time it's all over, or you've missed the point. This isn't a game with an end point or score, or even a pass or fail mark. It is worth it, and you have to feel that all along the way, in some part everyday, keep what's important in the front of your mind. And if you can't exactly "enjoy" the hard parts, you can at least appreciate them and find a way to be grateful, for it is all part and parcel of the gift you've been given.

The other nitty-gritty we will get into at a later time, but for now, congratulations my dear, dear friend. I wish you a sleep-filled night with minimal trips to the bathroom.
