We are just home from a long but fun day out. We took a little trip to Orvieto in Umbria, Italy for a little break from the hustle and bustle (and rain) of Rome.

Unfortunately we did not end up getting away from the rain, but it was okay, we were adequately prepared :-)
It was about an hour and a half to get to Orvieto, and then we took a funicular up to the town itself, which is on top of a summit of volcano peak. The views from the top are pretty great, though it was a bit misty today, and I didn't get many good ones...
Immediately outside the station we could visit the Pozzo di S. Patrizio, a gigantic well. Check it out:
It was very very deep. We did not go all the way down.
We wandered through the town, ducking in and out of stores and cafes when it rained. The sun came out for about 15 minutes, and it chose the perfect time to do so:
This is the duomo of Orvieto, very beautiful. You cannot take pictures of the inside, but the weather cooperated for long enough to get some nice ones of the outside...
We visited a few art galleries and saw some cool relics and sculpture, but really the joy of Orvieto is the city itself, with lovely scenes around every corner waiting to be enjoyed and sketched...
It was a lovely day, we are very grateful for the break. It ended quite excitedly too, as our train was delayed 2 hours, so we stowed away on A DIFFERENT train and sort of got caught.. But they didn't kick us off and we made it back to Rome - phew! The children are now asleep in their beds, getting some much needed rest! :-)
